General will - Ippanishi

Japanese: 一般意思 - いっぱんいし

A term used by JJ Rousseau. This term was first used in Diderot's Encyclopedia to distinguish it from the particular will of the individual, to represent the general interest of all mankind, and to establish natural law. In Rousseau's The Social Contract, however, it was defined as the public will of the state as a single personality established by a contract in which each individual surrenders himself completely, and law was considered to be an expression of this general will, which is on a different level from the general will, which is the sum of the particular wills of the individuals. This concept has often been used to deify existing political power, departing from Rousseau's fundamental theoretical structure.
