Pierre Jean de Béranger

A French composer of ditties (chansons). He gained popularity during the Restoration. His works ranged from sentimental and hedonistic to political and philosophical, and he maintained a love of freedom and dislike of authority. His pro-Napoleonic sentiments and works singing of free thought were anathema to the authorities, and he was imprisoned twice. After the July Revolution, he realized that his role was over, and stopped writing after his "Ditties" in 1833.

フランスの小唄(こうた)（シャンソン）作者。王政復古期に人気を博す。作品は、感傷的、享楽的なものから政治的、哲学的なものまで幅広く、自由を愛し権威を嫌う姿勢を貫いた。そのため親ナポレオン感情や自由思想を歌う作品が当局の忌諱(きき)に触れ、二度入獄のめにあった。七月革命後は自己の役割の終わったことを悟り、1833年の『小唄集』を最後に筆を絶った。
