Dopsch, Alfons
Born: June 14, 1868, Lobositz, Bohemia
Died January 9, 1953. Vienna Austrian economic historian. Professor at the University of Vienna. He excelled in research on the economic history of the early Middle Ages in particular, and criticized the stage theory of economic development as a historical methodology, arguing for a cultural continuity between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. He researched the origin and structure of the Grundherrschaft, focusing on historical materials from the Austrian region, and opposed the commonly held views of K. Inama-Sterneck and K. Lamprecht. His main works are Die Wirtschaftsentwicklung der Karolingerzeit (Economic Development in the Carolingian Period) (2 volumes, 1912-13), Wirtschaftliche und soziale Grundlager der europäischen Kulturentwicklung (Economic and Social Foundations of the Development of European Culture) (2 volumes, 18-20), and Naturwirtschaft und Geldwirtschaft in der Weltgeschichte (Naturwirtschaft und Geldwirtschaft in der Weltgeschichte) (30).
