Water bug (Diplonychus japonicus) - Water bug (English spelling)

Water bug (Diplonychus japonicus) - Water bug (English spelling)
An insect of the Hemiptera family, Bucconidae (illustration). It is so named because the male protects the eggs laid on its back until they hatch. It is a brown, flat, egg-shaped aquatic stink bug with a body length of about 19 mm. It has a short, large proboscis. Its front legs are powerful prehensile legs with two small claws at the tips, and its middle and back legs are swimming legs. It has a pair of retractable breathing valves at the tip of its abdomen, which it uses to take in air when floating on the water's surface. It is widely distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, and China, but its habitat is shrinking due to water pollution.
