Vest - chokki (English spelling) jack

A sleeveless vest or vest made of quilted or padded leather used by infantrymen for protection in the Middle Ages, or clothing of a similar shape. It is thought that the word "jacquerie" (a word derived from "jacques bonhomme", meaning "tenant") was used by European medieval royalty and aristocrats in a derogatory manner to refer to the peasant class, and that this eventually led to the use of "jacques" to refer to peasants, and then "jacque" to refer to the short coat worn by peasants, and so the word "jacques" came to mean the above-mentioned term.

In Japan, it is said that the term first came into use in 1864 (Genji 1) for the military uniforms of the shogunate army organized for the Choshu expedition, under names such as kodōgi, hakurai-dōgi, or tojin-dōgi. The colloquial name chokki is thought to have been established around 1868 (Meiji 1), and there are theories that it is a derivative of the English word jacket (Wa-Ei-Gō-Rin-Shusei), or that it is a corrupted version of the Dutch word jak. Currently, it is used almost synonymously with the English words waistcoat and vest, and sometimes the French word gilet.

Vests are often used with formal men's suits, tuxedos, and swallowtail coats, and are made of the same fabric for casual wear and a different fabric for formal wear. After World War II, wearing vests for non-formal wear came to be omitted, but whether they are worn or not depends on the fashion. They may also be worn in a different color and pattern than the jacket as an accent. Generally, the back of the vest is made of smooth silk fabric, and the vest may or may not have a collar, be single or double-breasted, and have two to four pockets, and the design varies depending on the type of jacket worn over it. Vests for other purposes include those with specific purposes (riding vests for horseback riding, clerical vests for clergy, bulletproof vests, sports vests, etc.) and, depending on the material, knitted vests made of wool, fur vests, and down vests filled with white goose down.

中世に歩兵が防護用に用いた、キルティングや詰め物をした革製の袖(そで)なし胴着、あるいはそれに似た形をした服のこと。ヨーロッパ中世の王侯貴族が小作人階級を軽蔑(けいべつ)してジャクリーjacquerie（小作人という意味のjacques bonhommeにちなむことば）とよんだことから、しだいにジャクJaques, Jacquesが小作人のことを、さらにはジャックjacqueが小作人の短い上着をさすようになって、冒頭の意味に転じたものと思われる。

　日本では1864年（元治1）に長州征伐のために編成された幕府軍の軍服に、小胴衣、舶来胴衣、唐人胴衣などの名称で用いられ始めたといわれる。チョッキという俗称は、1868年（明治1）ごろには定着したものと思われるが、英語のジャケットjacketからの派生語だとする説（和英語林集成）、あるいはオランダ語のjakの訛(なま)った語とする説などがある。現在では、英語のウエストコート、ベスト、ときにはフランス語のジレとほとんど同義に用いられている。

　正式の男物のスーツ、タキシード、燕尾(えんび)服にはチョッキが用いられることが多く、平常着には共布で、礼装用には別布でつくられる。第二次世界大戦後、礼装以外のチョッキ着用は省略されるようになったが、着用の有無は流行によって決まる。また、上着とは異なった色柄のものをアクセントとする目的で着用することもある。概してチョッキの後ろ身頃(みごろ)には滑りのよい拝絹地などが用いられ、襟はあったりなかったりで、打合せはシングルかダブル、ポケットは2～4つなど、その上に着用する上着の種類によってデザインが異なる。スーツ用以外のものには、ある目的をもつもの（乗馬用のライディング・ベスト、聖職者のためのクレリカル・ベスト、防弾チョッキ、スポーツ・ベストなど）や、素材からみて、毛糸で編んだニッティド・ベストや毛皮のファー・ベスト、ホワイトグースのダウンの入ったダウン・ベストなどがある。
