Joinvile (English spelling)

A city in the northeastern part of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. It is located about 150 km north-northwest of the state capital Florianopolis, near the inner part of San Francisco Bay, which extends deep into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the state's main industrial center, with industries such as steel, flour milling, and cotton textiles, and timber and industrial products are shipped from the outer port of San Francisco do Sul, about 30 km to the east. A railway line runs inland from the port, and a road connects the state capital with São Paulo. Population: 358,094 (1990 estimate).
