…It is a name used by Chinese people in the Tang and Song dynasties to refer to Arabs in the narrow sense and Muslims in the broad sense, and is also written as Da Shi Yi, Ta Shi, and Tai Seki. Originally, it was a transliteration of the Persian word Tāzīk, or Tāzī, which means Arabs, but after the Arab conquest, Persian Muslims came to be called by this name, and since the Turks used this word to refer to Persians, it came to mean Muslims in general. Later, the word Hui Hui, which is almost synonymous with it, became common, and this word fell into disuse. …
