German agronomist. Born in Prussia. Received his doctorate in 1873, and became a private lecturer at the University of Göttingen in 1875. Invited by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, he came to Japan in 1882 (Meiji 15), where he supervised soil survey work at the Geological Survey of Japan until 1894. Until 1892, he also served as an agricultural teacher at Komaba Agricultural School and its successor, the Tokyo Agricultural and Forestry School, and the Imperial University College of Agriculture. His major works include "Nihon no gyōgō to hokkaido komin-ron" (1888) and "nihon chisan-ron" (1891-1894). After returning to Japan, he engaged in research on tropical agriculture at the Berlin Agricultural University, the Witzenhausen and the Hamburg Colonial School, and left behind " Der Pflanzenbau in den Tropen und Subtropen " (1904-1911).
