coelacanth

Japanese: シーラカンス
coelacanth
〘Noun〙 (coelacanth) A general term for a lineage of fish belonging to the order Coelacanthi of the subclass of bony fishes, the order Coelacanthi. This fish flourished in the seas from the Devonian period of the Paleozoic to the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic. It was once known only as a fossil, but in 1938, a living one was caught for the first time off the coast of Madagascar, and since then, several hundred have been caught. It can reach a body length of 1.9 meters and a weight of 90 kilograms. Its body color is dark blue with white spots. Its body is long and laterally compressed. Primitive structures can be seen in each part of its body, making it a valuable fish in zoology as a "living fossil." Its spine is tubular, and the name "coelacanth" comes from this characteristic. Its fins have stalks, and the pectoral and pelvic fins are particularly large. Its scales have a unique structure called cosmin scales, and are made up of three layers. It is found only around the Comoro Islands in the tropical western Indian Ocean. They live in rocky areas at depths of 150 to 400 meters and feed on fish. Their population is very small and they are at risk of extinction.
