This refers to so-called "unfiltered paper," which is made from pure ingredients without adding any rice paste. It also refers to paper that has not been processed in any way, such as being glossed. It is the opposite of "aged paper" (paper that has been processed after being filtered), and the first instance of the term was found in the Shosoin documents from 749 (Tenpyo Shoho 1). In the dialect of Northern Hida (Gifu Prefecture), the term generally refers to handmade washi paper, but in Kamihei County, Iwate Prefecture, it can also mean Mino paper.
