…Netherlands painter. Born in Haarlem, he moved to Leuven around 1448, where he spent the rest of his life. He was strongly influenced by Rogier van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck at different times, and added the sharp sense of realism typical of those from the Northern Netherlands to create his own tranquil style of painting. In the central panel of his masterpiece, the Eucharist Altarpiece, The Last Supper, he uses linear perspective with a high degree of precision for a Northern painter, and the detailed depiction of the interior and the subtle use of light make the motionless figures stand out powerfully. …

…ネーデルラントの画家。ハールレムに生まれ，1448年ころからルーバンに移り住み，同地で生涯を終えた。ロヒール･ファン･デル･ウェイデンとヤン･ファン･アイクの影響を時期を異にして強く受け，さらに北部ネーデルラント出身者特有の鋭い写実感覚を加えて独自の静謐な画風を創造した。後期の代表作《聖餐の祭壇画》の中央パネル〈最後の晩餐〉には，北方画家としてはひじょうに精度の高い線的遠近法が用いられており，細密な室内描写や細やかな光の表現が動きの少ない人物を力強く浮かび上がらせている。…
