Bay of Biscay

A bay surrounded by the west coast of France and the north coast of Spain. In Spain it is called the Vizcaya Bay, and in France it is called the Gascogne Bay. From Ouessant Island at the tip of the Brittany Peninsula (→ Brittany) to Cape Ortegal at the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, it is about 500 km east-west and north-south. The north coast (southern Brittany) and south coast (Spain side) are rocky coasts with steep indentations. The east coast is sandy and relatively smooth, and the port cities of Nantes and Bordeaux developed on the estuaries of the Loire and Garonne rivers. It is famous for sudden violent storms caused by northwesterly winds and a tidal range of up to about 12 meters.
