Cultural anthropologist and sociologist. Born in Chiba Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Sociology at Tokyo Imperial University in 1921 (Taisho 10). Became an assistant professor at Keijo Imperial University in 1924, and after studying in Europe and the United States, became a professor at the same university. Influenced by Westermarck, he studied shamanism in Northeast Asia, particularly Korea, and received his doctorate in literature in 1943 (Showa 18). After World War II, he became a lecturer at Kyushu University, and in 1949 (Showa 24) became a professor at Aichi University, where he taught sociology and was active as one of the pioneers of cultural anthropology in Japan. His major works include "Research on Korean Shamanism" (2 volumes, co-authored, 1937, 1938), "Ethnic Groups and Religions of Manchuria and Mongolia" (co-authored, 1941), "Field Studies of Korean Shamanism" (1950), and "Korean Folklore" (1954).
