A semi-cold-hardy bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). The commonly cultivated spider lily ( H. speciosa Salisb.) is native to the West Indies and is called the spider lily in English. It has 12-20 leaves and grows to 60 cm in length. It blooms from summer to autumn. The flower stalk is shorter than the leaves and bears an umbel of 9-15 flowers at the top, which can reach a diameter of 20 cm. The flowers are white and have a vanilla-like fragrance. H. calathina Nicols. is native to the Andes and has 6-8 leaves, 45-60 cm in length, and resembles the amaryllis, also of the Amaryllidaceae family. It bears 2-4 flowers per flower stalk. It is planted in April in sandy soil rich in organic matter. It grows well in full sun and can survive winter outdoors in warm areas.
