A small four-legged dinosaur discovered in a layer of rock dating back 84.65 to 77.05 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period in Mongolia. It is classified as a member of the Ornithischia order, Pericraniocephala (suborder), Ceratopsia (infraorder), and Neoceratopsian (neo-ceratopsian). It is about 2 meters long. The front of its nose is a hooked parrot-like beak, which was probably used to bite grass. There was a protrusion on its nose that could not yet be called a horn. The genus name is Greek for "first horned face." Numerous skeletons have been discovered, from newborns to fully grown adults. It is said that there are more than 100 of them to date. The first dinosaur eggs discovered in the world were thought to be those of Protoceratops, but in the 1990s it was discovered that most of them were those of Oviraptor . A fossil specimen of a Protoceratops and a Velociraptor grappling has also been excavated. A replica of this fighting fossil is on display at the Dinosaur Center in Kanna, Gunma Prefecture, and at the Dinosaur Museum in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture.
