An evergreen or deciduous dicotyledonous tree of the genus Ochna in the family Ochnaceae (illustration). Approximately 30 species are known to grow as shrubs or trees in the tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and South America. The leaves are glossy, leathery, alternate, and have finely toothed edges. There are no stipules. Flowers are borne one to many in terminal inflorescences on the branches, and are persistent with five sepals. There are five to ten petals and many stamens. The ovary is deeply divided into 3 to 10 lobes, each of which produces a single seed, resulting in a strange-looking fruit with several drupes attached to a developed stipe.
