Al-Idrīsi, Abū 'Abd Allāh Muammad

Japanese: イドリーシー - いどりーしー(英語表記)al-Idrīsī, Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muammad
Al-Idrīsi, Abū 'Abd Allāh Muammad

Islamic geographer. Born in Ceuta, Morocco. Studied in Cordoba, Spain, and traveled to Asia Minor, Africa, Spain, and France. Invited by the Norman king of Sicily, Roger II, he created a flat celestial map and a world map in the capital Palermo, and wrote a commentary on them, "The Joys of Traveling the World." He later wrote an even more extensive geography book, "The Garden of the People," which he dedicated to Guglielmo I (1120-1166), but it has been lost and no longer exists. In the international academic city of Palermo, he acquired a wealth of knowledge about Western Christian countries, and added accurate knowledge about places as far away as Scandinavia and the Atlantic islands. His world map is known for its completeness.
