Islamic geographer. Born in Ceuta, Morocco. Studied in Cordoba, Spain, and traveled to Asia Minor, Africa, Spain, and France. Invited by the Norman king of Sicily, Roger II, he created a flat celestial map and a world map in the capital Palermo, and wrote a commentary on them, "The Joys of Traveling the World." He later wrote an even more extensive geography book, "The Garden of the People," which he dedicated to Guglielmo I (1120-1166), but it has been lost and no longer exists. In the international academic city of Palermo, he acquired a wealth of knowledge about Western Christian countries, and added accurate knowledge about places as far away as Scandinavia and the Atlantic islands. His world map is known for its completeness. [Keishiro Sato] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
