Greater Pied Kingfisher

Japanese: ヤマセミ(山翡翠) - ヤマセミ（英語表記）greater pied kingfisher

A bird of the order Coraciiformes and family Alcedinidae (illustration). Total length is about 38 cm. The head, crest and back are covered with fine black and white markings, while the neck, throat and belly are white. Both sexes have a grey-black horizontal band on their chest, but this area is brown in males. Due to the black and white pattern, it is also known as the Kanokoshobin (red kingfisher). It has a long beak with a yellowish-white tip and grey other parts. Its legs are short and grey. It is found in eastern Asia and the Himalayas. In Japan, it lives in mountain streams and large rivers from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but its numbers have been decreasing recently.

ブッポウソウ目カワセミ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約38cm。頭部，冠羽，背面は黒白の細かい斑紋よりなり，くび側，のど，腹は白い。雌雄とも胸には灰黒色の横帯があるが，雄はこの部分が褐色を帯びている。黒白の模様から一名カノコショウビン(鹿子翡翠)と呼ばれる。くちばしは長く，先端は黄白色で他の部分は灰色。脚は短くて灰色。アジア東部とヒマラヤに分布する。日本では北海道から九州までの山地の渓流や大きな河川にすんでいるが，最近はその数が減少している。
