trichloroacetaldehyde. C 2 HCl 3 O (147.39). CCl 3 CHO. It is synthesized by hydrolysis of hemiacetal Cl 3 CCH(OH)OC 2 H 5 produced by chlorination of ethyl alcohol. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. Its melting point is -57 °C, its boiling point is 98 °C. It is 1.512. It is converted to chloral hydrate CCl 3 CH(OH) 2 by the addition of an equal molar amount of water. Chloral hydrate is a colorless plate-like crystal. Its melting point is 57 °C, its boiling point is 96-98 °C (it dissociates into chloral and water). It is easily soluble in water. LD 50 479 mg/kg (rat, oral). Chloral can be obtained by adding concentrated sulfuric acid to chloral hydrate and distilling it. It is used as a reagent for detecting and quantifying silver, as well as a hypnotic agent.
