Ginkensou (English spelling) Hawaiian silver-sword

Japanese: ギンケンソウ(英語表記)Hawaiian silver‐sword
Ginkensou (English spelling) Hawaiian silver-sword
A large perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (illustration), endemic to parts of the Hawaiian Islands. Due to its unique appearance, it is a rare plant that is symbolic of Hawaii and is under strict protection. It grows only on the volcanic lava fields of Maui and Hawaii Island, and the colony in the crater of Haleakala Volcano on Maui is particularly famous. The leaves are sword-shaped, 20 to 40 cm long, and many of them grow densely from the base, making the plant spherical. The leaves are hard, sharply pointed, and covered with soft silvery hairs. The name "silver sword grass" is a translation of the English name based on the shape of the leaves, and the local name is hinahina.
