This is called arc quenching, and can be classified according to the medium used: (1) oil circuit breakers, which are opened and closed in oil and utilize the arc quenching power of hydrogen, the main component of the gas produced by the decomposition of oil by the arc; (2) air circuit breakers, which extinguish the arc by blowing compressed air onto the arc; (3) gas circuit breakers, which are opened and closed in an inert gas such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ₎ ; (4) vacuum circuit breakers, which extinguish the arc by diffusing it in a vacuum; and (5) air circuit breakers, which are opened and closed in the atmosphere (this includes magnetic blow-out circuit breakers, which use a magnetic field to stretch the arc and extinguish it, and low-voltage no-fuse circuit breakers).
