Epoxide

A general term for compounds that have an epoxy group in the molecule. It is also called an epoxy compound or oxirane. An epoxy group is a three-membered ring group consisting of two carbons and one oxygen. Epoxides are usually made by adding oxygen to a double bond. Alternatively, they can be synthesized by reacting an alkali with a halohydrin to cause cyclization. A representative compound of this type is ethylene oxide. Epoxides are highly reactive and have a wide range of uses as synthetic intermediates. Epoxy resins are made by polycondensing compounds that have two or more epoxy groups in the molecule, taking advantage of the high reactivity of epoxides, and are used in adhesives and other products.

分子内にエポキシ基をもつ化合物の総称。エポキシ化合物、オキシランともいう。エポキシ基は炭素2個と酸素1個からなる3員環の基である。エポキシドは通常二重結合に酸素を付加させてつくる。そのほかに、ハロヒドリンにアルカリを作用させて環化させる方法によっても合成できる。この種の化合物の代表はエチレンオキシドである。エポキシドは反応性が大きく、合成中間体としての用途が広い。エポキシドの高い反応性を利用して、分子内に2個以上のエポキシ基をもつ化合物を重縮合させてつくるのがエポキシ樹脂であり、接着剤などに用いられている。
