Haiku poet. His real name was Takeharu. He was also known as Sanro. He was born in Sakaigawa Village, Higashi-Yatsushiro County, Yamanashi Prefecture (now Fuefuki City). He entered the English department at Waseda University in 1905 (Meiji 38). He participated in the Waseda Ginsha and submitted his haiku to the "Hototogisu" and "Kokumin Shimbun" haiku circles. He maintained a friendship with Wakayama Bokusui during his time at university, and later contributed his works to "Sosaku." In 1909, he abandoned all academic pursuits, returned to his hometown, and began a rural life. In 1912 (Taisho 1), when Takahama Kyoshi returned to the haiku circle, he submitted his haiku to the miscellaneous poems column of "Hototogisu," and won the lead spot with a haiku such as "The dew of sweet potatoes, the mountain shadows, are corrected and thin." In 1917, he became the editor of the haiku magazine "Unmo," which was renamed from "Kira," and selected haiku until his death. He developed a dignified, powerful and profound style of haiku poetry through his haiku collections such as "Sanroshu" (1932, Kinshasha) and "Hakugaku" (1943, Kisanbo). He also wrote many essay collections, critiques and critical translations. He lost his eldest and third sons in World War II, and his second son also died of illness, but he continued to pursue the spirit of haiku literature, and his will was carried on by his fourth son, Ryuta.
