A signpost at a fork in the road indicates the direction, destination, and distance of each road for the convenience of travelers. Sometimes called a "michijirushi" or "dohyo," the word often refers to historical or small signs along old highways or mountain trails. The origin of road signs in Japan is unclear, but most of the existing remains were erected in early modern times or even later modern times. Most are made of stone, but some are made of wood.
