Butokuden - Butokuden

It was one of the palace buildings in the Daidairi of Heian-kyo, built northwest of the Daigokuden and completed in 796 (Enryaku 15), and the first Imperial viewing was held, with martial artists conscripted from all over the country. The building faces east, with the Banquet Pine Grove in front, where horse racing and mounted archery events were held after the Boys' Day ceremonies and other occasions, and it was called Umarachidono and Yubadono. Since the mid-Heian period, it has burned down and been rebuilt many times, but in 1895 (Meiji 28), when the Dai Nippon Butokukai was founded, a replica Butokuden was built within the Heian Shrine grounds and used as the association's main training ground.

平安京大内裏(だいだいり)の殿舎の一つで、大極殿の北西に建てられ、796年（延暦15）に完成し、武芸優秀の者を諸国から徴集して、初めての天覧が行われた。建物は東面し、前面に宴の松原があり、端午の節儀後などには、ここで駒牽(こまびき)（競馬(くらべうま)）や騎射(きしゃ)が行われ、馬埒殿(うまらちどの)、弓場殿(ゆばどの)などとよばれた。平安中期以後、しばしば焼亡と再興を繰り返したが、1895年（明治28）大日本武徳会の創設を機に平安神宮内に模擬の武徳殿を新築し、同会の大演武場とした。
