A ceramic made by sintering barium titanate powder at high temperatures. Its dielectric constant is as large as 1500-2000 at room temperature, so it can be used as a dielectric for capacitors. Small, high-capacity capacitors can be obtained, but the loss is somewhat large and the capacitance error tends to be large. It has a significant electrostrictive effect and a large electromechanical coupling coefficient of 0.21-0.50, so it is also used in electrostrictive vibrators, mechanical filters, piezoelectric elements, etc. In this case, it is necessary to apply high voltage to the ceramic to align the polarization direction. Barium carbonate and titanium oxide powders are mixed, pressed, and calcined to make barium titanate, which is then thoroughly crushed and formed into the desired shape, and sintered again to make ceramic.

チタン酸バリウムの粉末を高温で焼結してつくられる磁器。比誘電率が室温で 1500～2000という大きい値を示すので，コンデンサ用誘電体として利用できる。小型で大容量のコンデンサが得られるが，損失が多少大きくまた容量誤差も大きくなる傾向がある。電歪効果が顕著に現れ，電気機械結合係数が 0.21～0.50と大きいことから，電歪振動子，メカニカルフィルタ，圧電素子などにも利用されている。この場合には磁器に高圧を印加して分極方向をそろえておくことが必要である。炭酸バリウム，酸化チタンの粉末を混合，プレスし，煆焼 (かしょう) してチタン酸バリウムとし，これを十分粉砕したのち希望の形状に成形し，再び焼結して磁器とする。
