If earthly existence is merely an illusion, then eternal life, or true existence, can only exist in heaven. This idea is best embodied in the religious plays performed by the religious orders that spearheaded the Counter-Reformation movement. In particular, Jesuit drama developed greatly between 1550 and 1650, with Jakob Biedermann (1578-1639), Pontanus, Avancini, and others active in the field. Martyr plays, which contain cruel scenes, were often performed in Jesuit dramas for the purpose of evangelization. From [Baroque Literature]…In these advanced countries, national unification was being carried out, and literature, the main area of culture, was created and accepted under a common understanding, whereas in Germany, which was made up of about 300 statehoods, and partly due to the influence of the Thirty Years' War, there were large regional differences and literary production was extremely diverse. In the Catholic south, Latin literature continued to dominate as in the Humanist period, and there were playwright Jakob Biedermann (1578-1639) and poet Jakob Balde (1604-68) and there was a strong tendency toward the Counter-Reformation. The imperial city of Nuremberg was home to Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (1607-58) and other poets of the highbrow "Société d'études herders et d'flowers" (1644), while eastern Silesia produced many Lutheran poets and playwrights, including Opitz, Friedrich von Logau (1604-55), Gerhart, and Grueffius, and thus, despite being on the outskirts, it had the feel of a literary center of the era. *Some of the terminology referenced in "Biedermann, J." is listed below. … … ※「Biedermann,J.」
