Sombrero Galaxy

A galaxy in Virgo. Its catalog number is M104, NGC4594. It is located near the alpha star Spica in Virgo, and is called the Sombrero Galaxy because its shape resembles the sombrero hat worn by Mexicans. It is difficult to see with the naked eye, but the hat structure can be seen with a telescope with an aperture of about 10 cm. It is characterized by a disk with a noticeable dark band of dust and a large spherical part (bulge), and is surrounded by hundreds of globular clusters. It is an "edge-on galaxy" that is seen from the edge. It is about 46 million light years away from Earth. Its apparent magnitude is 9.3, and its apparent diameter is about 9 arc minutes by 4 arc minutes. It can be seen in the southern sky around 9 pm in late May.

おとめ座にある銀河。カタログ番号はM104、NGC4594。おとめ座のα(アルファ)星（スピカ）あたりにあり、メキシコ人のかぶるソンブレロという帽子に形状が似ているのでソンブレロ銀河とよばれる。肉眼では見にくいが口径10センチメートル程度の望遠鏡で帽子構造がわかる。塵(ちり)による目だつ暗黒帯をもつ円盤と大きな球状部分（バルジ）が特徴で、数百個の球状星団に囲まれている。銀河を真横から見ている「エッジオン銀河edge-on galaxy」である。地球からの距離は約4600万光年。実視等級は9.3等、視直径は9分×4分程度。5月下旬の午後9時ごろに南の空に見える。
