...Historically, it referred to a rectangular area bounded by the Mureş River in the north, the Tisza River in the west, the Danube River in the south, and the Western Carpathian Mountains in the east, most of which now belongs to Romania and part to Yugoslavia. In Romanian it is called Banatul, in Serbian it is called Banat, and in Hungarian it is called Bánát or Bánság. The name comes from the South Slavic ban (meaning "master" or "ruler") and referred to the territory ruled by Van.
