It is an evergreen perennial plant of the Gesneriaceae family (APG classification: Gesneriaceae), and about 40 species grow wild in the forests of tropical America. The leaves grow opposite each other, with stolons extending in all directions and producing offshoots at the tips, but some species have erect stems and do not produce stolons. E. cupreata Hanst. has copper-green long ovate leaves and scarlet tubular flowers. This species has been cultivated in many different leaf colors and mottled patterns, and is popular as a potted plant. Acajou cv. Acajou is a hardy species with silver-white mottling, and is widespread. It prefers high temperatures of 15°C or higher and high humidity. It grows well in the shade, and is suitable for indoor gardening in hanging pots and terrariums. It is propagated by cuttings.

イワタバコ科(APG分類:イワタバコ科)の常緑多年草で、熱帯アメリカの森林帯に約40種が自生する。葉は対生し、四方にストロンを伸ばして、先端に子株をつくるが、直立茎でストロンを出さない種類もある。ベニハエギリ(ハイベニギリ)E. cupreata Hanst.は銅緑色の長卵形葉で、緋紅(ひこう)色の筒状花をつける。本種からは、葉色や斑(ふ)模様の変化した園芸品種が多数つくられ、鉢物として人気がある。アカジョウcv. Acajouは銀白色の斑が入る強健種で、普及している。15℃以上の高温と多湿を好む。日陰でよく育ち、吊(つ)り鉢やテラリウムなど室内園芸に適している。挿木で殖やす。
