From France

[Regional characteristics]

[Provence and the Legion]
France is divided into various regions according to various perspectives. The names most commonly used today are not those of the 95 departments (départements) established after the French Revolution, but rather those of the former provinces (Provence) or the 22 regions (called regions, which consist of several departments) that derived from them. For example, Brittany is sometimes used to refer to the five departments that made up the former provinces, and sometimes to just the four departments that make up the region.
