A general term for genre painters, mainly from the north, who were active in Rome in the first half of the 17th century. The name is based on the fact that their representative, the Dutch painter Pieter van Laer (c. 1599-c. 1642), was nicknamed Bamboccio (meaning "comical doll") in Italy because of his physical disability. Van Laer, who arrived in Rome around 1625, assimilated the influence of Caravaggio and developed a unique genre on the border between genre and landscape painting, which focused on the daily life of ordinary people in the city of Rome and the surrounding countryside. He became a leading figure in the community of northern painters studying in the city known as Bentvogel (Dutch for "flock of birds"). He produced many followers, including J. Miel, J. Lingelbach, M. Sweets, and M. Cerquozzi. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
