A city in central Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. Tsuma, whose town developed along the midstream of the Hitotsuse River, was the center of Hyuga from ancient times to the Middle Ages, and Tsuma-no-Kusu (a natural monument) which is said to be about 1200 years old is located in the grounds of Tsuma Shrine. On the alluvial plateau to the west are the remains of the Kokufu and Kokubunji temples, and the Saitobaru burial mounds. The Higashi Kyushu Expressway runs through the eastern part of the city. Greenhouse cultivation is thriving, and green peppers, which are the number one produced in Japan, as well as green beans and cucumbers, are cultivated. Livestock farming is also practiced.
