Japanese: ふんどし(褌) - ふんどし

A cloth that covers a man's crotch area. Also called a loincloth or tabusagi. Rokushaku fundoshi is named after its length. Ecchu fundoshi is a three-foot piece of cloth with a T-shaped string attached. It is a popular myth that it was invented by Matsudaira Ecchu-no-kami or the prostitute Ecchu. Mokko fundoshi is an even simpler version of Ecchu, with a mokko-shaped piece of cloth used for carrying things covering the crotch area. Fundoshi-iwai is a ceremony to celebrate the coming of age of boys aged 9 to 15, in which they put on a fundoshi for the first time. It is also called heko-iwai.

男性の股間(こかん)をおおう布。下帯，犢鼻褌(たふさぎ)とも。六尺ふんどしは長さからの名称。越中ふんどしは３尺の布にT字状に紐(ひも)を付ける。松平越中守や遊女越中の考案というのは俗説。もっこふんどしは越中をさらに簡略化し運搬具のもっこ形の布で股間をおおう。褌祝は９〜15歳ころの男子の成人を祝って，初めてふんどしをしめる儀礼。ヘコ祝ともいう。
