Matsushiro

Japanese: 松代 - まつしろ
Matsushiro
The area is located in the north of Nagano Prefecture, southeast of Nagano City, and was formerly on the right bank of the Chikuma River. It was merged with Nagano City in 1966. It was the site of Kaizu Castle, built by Takeda Shingen at the end of the Sengoku period, and in the early modern period it became the residence of the Sanada clan, and flourished as a castle town of the Matsushiro Domain, the largest domain in Shinano Province. Since the Meiji period, it has stagnated due to the development of Nagano City, but the appearance of a castle town remains. It is home to the site of Kaizu Castle (Matsushiro Castle), a national historic site, the Matsushiro Domain Literary and Military School, as well as Sakuma Shozan Shrine, Chokokuji Temple, and Sairakuji Temple. It was the epicenter of the Matsushiro earthquake that occurred in 1965, and the underground bunker dug in preparation for the evacuation of the Imperial Headquarters at the end of World War II is now the Matsushiro Earthquake Observatory of the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Matsudai

This is the former area of Tokamachi City in the northwest of the Higashikubiki Hills in southern Niigata Prefecture. In 1954, the villages of Matsushiro and Yamadaira were merged to form a town. In 1959, Nunagawa Village was incorporated. In 2005, Tokamachi City, Kawanishi Town, Nakazato Village, and Matsunoyama Town were merged to form Tokamachi City. Most of the area is mountainous, but there is a small amount of flat land along the Shibumi River, a tributary of the Shinano River that flows east through the center. Cultivated land is laid out in terraced rice paddies on the mountainside. This is one of the areas with the heaviest snowfall in Japan. It is designated as a landslide prevention area. The main hall of the ancient Matsuo Shrine is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
