Born: February 2, 1915, Cape Town
[Died] November 17, 2002. Jerusalem. Israeli politician and diplomat. Graduated from Cambridge University. 1948-59: Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, Ambassador there, Ambassador to the United States from 1950-59. Member of the Knesset in 1959, Minister of Education and Culture from 1960-63, Deputy Prime Minister from 1963-66. Director of the Weizmann Institute from 1958-66. Became Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1966. As a moderate on Arab issues, he often clashed with other ministers. He was held responsible for the October 1973 War, and left his post as Prime Minister when G. Meyer resigned in June 1974. Fluent in several languages, including English, Arabic, and Hebrew, he was the author of many books, including My Country (1973).
