Arashi Sanemon

A kabuki actor from Kamigata. There are 11 generations of him up to the Showa era (1906-1980), but the first is the most famous. The first (1635-1690) was the leading figure in the yatsushigoto and nuregoto genres, and the originator of the Arashi style, which was a major influence in the Osaka theater world. He was originally the son of an Edo fish wholesaler. His play "Sayoarashi," which he performed in Osaka during the Kanbun era (1661-1673), was a huge hit, and it is said that he changed his surname from Maruko to Arashi after the line, "Storm in flowers." His son, the second (1661-1701), and his grandson, the third (1697-1754), were both leading actors and troupe leaders, and roppo became a family art that became one of the specialties of Osaka. From the fourth, they became female actors, and the fifth and eighth generations were given the prestigious names of the first and fourth Arashi Koroku, respectively.

上方(かみがた)の歌舞伎(かぶき)俳優。昭和の11世（1906―1980）まであるが、初世がもっとも有名。初世（1635―1690）は、やつし事、濡事(ぬれごと)の第一人者として、大坂の劇壇で一大勢力を誇った嵐系の元祖。もと江戸の魚問屋の子。寛文(かんぶん)年間（1661～1673）に大坂で上演した『小夜嵐(さよあらし)』が大当りをとり、その台詞(せりふ)「花に嵐」にちなんで丸子(まるこ)の姓を嵐と改めたといわれる。その子2世（1661―1701）、孫の3世（1697―1754）までは立役(たちやく)で座元も兼ね、六方(ろっぽう)をお家の芸とし大坂の名物の一つとなった。4世から女方(おんながた)となり、また5世、8世はそれぞれ初世、4世嵐小六(ころく)の前名。
