Evangeline. A Tale of Acadie

A full-length narrative poem by American poet Longfellow, written in 1847. It is based on the true story of the forced relocation of French colonists from Acadie (now Nova Scotia) by the British Army in 1755, and is a tragic love poem written in the style of Goethe's Hermann and Dorothea and the love stories of Swedish poet Tegnell. Gabrielle and Evangeline, a young couple from the idyllic village of Grand Pré, are pursued by the British Army on their wedding day and are separated. Evangeline, the protagonist, wanders all over America in search of her husband, and after many years, while nursing him in an asylum in Philadelphia, where a plague is rampant, she is finally reunited with him on his deathbed. The poem's lyricism and simple poetic language have earned it a favorable reputation among a wide readership.

アメリカの詩人ロングフェローの長編物語詩。1847年作。1755年アカディー（現ノバ・スコシア）のフランス系植民者たちがイギリス軍に強制移住させられたときの実話をもとに、ゲーテの『ヘルマンとドロテーア』、スウェーデンの詩人テグネルの恋愛物語などにならって書かれた悲恋哀詩。牧歌的なグラン・プレ村の若い男女ガブリエルとエバンジェリンは、結婚式当日イギリス軍に追われ、生き別れの身となる。夫を探し求める主人公エバンジェリンはアメリカ各地を彷徨(ほうこう)、長い年月ののち、悪疫の蔓延(まんえん)するフィラデルフィアの施療院で看護中、臨終まぎわの夫とようやく再会する。その叙情性と平易な詩語のために、広い読者層の好評を得た。
