German composer. Born in China. In 1922, he moved to Berlin, where he studied composition under Friedrich E. Koch at the Berlin Academy of Music (1924-1926) and musicology at the University of Berlin (1927-1931). He was a professor at the Berlin Academy of Music from 1948, and served as its principal from 1953 to 1970. His students included Einem and Yun Isang. He showed a talent for stage music, and produced operas and ballets using the twelve-tone technique, operas with electronic sounds, and experimental operas without plots. He also attracted attention for his use of "variable time" in instrumental music, which systematically increases and decreases the time signature. His works include the operas Romeo and Juliet (1943), Rosamunde Floris (1960), Abstract Opera No. 1 (1953), and the piano piece Ornamente (1950).
