The founder of early Catalonia. In Catalan, he is called Guifré. He was of Visigothic noble birth and united the counties of Barcelona, Urgell, Besalú, and Gerona, making the right to govern them hereditary and achieving virtual independence from the Frankish Kingdom. At the same time, he tackled the Reconquista (war of recovery) that had been abandoned for a long time, and recovered Montserrat and other sacred places for the Catalan people in later times. The church of Santa María de Ripoll and the monastery of San Juan de las Abadesas, masterpieces of Catalan Romanesque, were founded by him.

初期カタルニャの建国者。カタルニャ語ではギフレーGuifréと呼ばれる。西ゴート貴族の出身で，バルセロナ，ウルヘル，ベサルー，ヘロナなどの伯領を統合，これらの統治権を世襲化してフランク王国からの実質的独立を達成した。同時に長い間放置されていたレコンキスタ(国土回復戦争)に取り組み，後世カタルニャ人の霊場となるモンセラートなどを回復した。カタルニャ･ロマネスクの傑作，リポルのサンタ･マリア教会とサン･フアン･デ･ラス･アバデサス修道院は彼の創建による。
