?-898 The founder of early Catalonia. In Catalan, he is called Guifré. He was of Visigothic noble birth and united the counties of Barcelona, Urgell, Besalú, and Gerona, making the right to govern them hereditary and achieving virtual independence from the Frankish Kingdom. At the same time, he tackled the Reconquista (war of recovery) that had been abandoned for a long time, and recovered Montserrat and other sacred places for the Catalan people in later times.
