A Shingon Buddhist temple in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. It can also be read as "Ieharadera." Its mountain name is Ichijozan. It was founded in 704 (Keiun 1) as the birthplace of Gyoki. Izumi Kofu, who wrote the Gyoki Nenpu (Chronology of Gyoki) in 1175 (Angen 1), praised the temple as a sacred place comparable to Kapila Castle, the birthplace of the Buddha. In 1245 (Kangen 3), Eison performed the betsujubikukai (special precepts) at this temple for the first time. There is a strong faith in the principal image of Manjusri Bodhisattva, said to have been created by Gyoki, and the temple is now famous for its entrance exam prayers and graffiti. It also houses three scrolls of the Illustrated Activities of Gyoki Bodhisattva. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
