A city in the southern part of Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1953. It occupies the left bank of the downstream Yahagi River and faces Chita Bay. The central city area used to be called Saijo, and was the castle town of the Sakai clan after 1562, and the Matsudaira clan in the Edo period. Heisaka in the south prospered as a river port on the Yahagi River during the Edo period. The Meitetsu Nishio Line runs through the city. The city was a producer of Mikawa cotton and the textile industry was thriving, but in recent years the transportation equipment industry has developed significantly, accounting for more than 80% of the city's 1 trillion yen (2003) manufacturing shipment value. Tea cultivation is thriving, and the city produces about half of the national total for matcha. In April 2011, the towns of Isshiki, Kira, and Hazu in Hazu County were incorporated. 161.22 km2 . 165,298 people (2010).

愛知県南部の市。1953年市制。矢作(やはぎ)川下流左岸を占め,知多湾に臨む。中心市街は古くは西条と呼ばれ,1562年以後酒井氏の,また江戸時代は松平氏の城下であり,南部の平坂(へいさか)は江戸時代,矢作川水運の河港として栄えた。名鉄西尾線が通じる。三河木綿の産地で繊維工業が盛んであったが,近年輸送用機器工業が大きく発展し,市の製造品出荷額1兆円(2003)の8割以上を占めている。茶の栽培が盛んで,抹茶の生産では全国の約半分を占めている。2011年4月幡豆郡一色町,吉良町,幡豆町を編入。161.22km2。16万5298人(2010)。
