Ribbon finch (English: ribbon finch)
A bird of the family Acanthidae (illustration) in the order Passerine. It is smaller than a sparrow, measuring about 12 cm in length. Sexes are different. It has a brown body with a row of fine black horizontal stripes. Males have large, conspicuous crimson spots from their cheeks to their throat, and a large chestnut spot on their underside. Females lack the red spots on their cheeks and throat, and the chestnut spots on their undersides are unclear. It has a thick beak that is large for its size. It lives in the savannas, shrub forests, farmlands, and desert grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa, and breeds in monogamous pairs. It builds its nests in shrubs or tree cavities, and is bag-shaped with a short tunnel at the entrance.

スズメ目カエデチョウ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約12cm,スズメより小さい。雌雄異色。茶褐色に黒色の細かい横斑が並んでいる。雄はほおからのどによく目だつ紅赤色の大斑があり,腹部にも栗色の大斑がある。雌はほおからのどの赤色斑がなく,腹の栗色斑も不明りょう。体の割りには大きいぶあついくちばしをもつ。サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカのサバンナ,低木林,農耕地,砂漠草原などにすみ,1夫1妻で繁殖する。巣は低木の茂みや木の洞穴の中につくり,袋状で入口に短いトンネルがついている。
