Mt. Kawai - Enonoke

Japanese:
Mt. Kawai - Enonoke

A mountain in Nobeoka City, northern Miyazaki Prefecture. It is 728 meters above sea level. Its steep granite porphyry form forms a mountain chain with Mukabakiyama to the west, separated by the valley of the Hohri River. This dyke was formed with the intrusion of Ookueyama granite to the west, and Kawai-dake is located at its eastern end. There is a hokoiwa rock at the summit, which is said to be a menhir from the Yayoi period. There is a circular burial mound in Tawarano on the eastern foot of the mountain, and it has been under the management of the Imperial Household Agency since 1895 (Meiji 28) as the legendary site of Ninigi-no-mikoto's tomb. It is also known as one of the fiercest battlefields of the Seinan War, when the defeated Satsuma army escaped from Takachiho to Kagoshima by crossing the steep Kawai-dake mountain. In Tawarano, there is the Saigo Takamori Camp Site Museum, where his belongings are on display.
