The first half of the 20th century was the golden age of luxury passenger ships, with the construction of a succession of large, high-speed passenger ships, including the tragic Titanic (46,328 gross tons) which took 1,513 lives on its maiden voyage 12 years later, the Queen Mary (81,235 gross tons) which cut the time to cross the Atlantic to three days and 21 hours in 1938, and the Queen Elizabeth (83,673 gross tons), which was called "the greatest machine ever made by man." …
