This refers to an abnormal hypersensitivity reaction that is undesirable to the living body, induced by the administration of a normal dose or less of a drug. In many cases, it occurs due to an underlying abnormality in the patient's constitution. At the end of the 19th century, E. von Behring observed that when he repeatedly injected animals with bacterial toxins, sometimes a very small amount of the toxin, less than the lethal dose, caused severe shock symptoms. He believed that this was because the animals had become hypersensitive to the toxin, and called this state "hypersensitivity." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
