A facility for removing fission products from spent nuclear fuel in nuclear reactors and recovering reusable uranium and plutonium. The most widely used organic solvent extraction method, known as the Purex method, is used to process uranium oxide fuel used in light water reactors. In Japan, a Purex method reprocessing plant (annual processing capacity of 210 tons) is in operation in Tokai-mura, Ibaraki Prefecture, and in anticipation of an increase in demand for reprocessing, a reprocessing plant with an annual processing capacity of 800 tons is scheduled to begin operation in Rokkasho-mura, Aomori Prefecture in 2005.

原子炉で使用済みとなった核燃料の中から，核分裂生成物を除去し，再利用可能なウランやプルトニウムを回収するための施設。軽水炉で用いられる酸化ウラン燃料の処理には，ピューレックス法と呼ばれる有機溶媒抽出法が最も広く用いられている。日本では，茨城県東海村にピューレックス法による再処理工場 (年間処理能力 210t) が稼働しているが，再処理需要の増大を見込んで，青森県六ヶ所村に，年間 800tの処理能力をもつ再処理工場が 2005年に操業開始の予定である。
