A city in the southeastern tip of Tamaulipas state in northeastern Mexico. It is a port city located on the north bank of the Panuco River, about 350 km north-northeast of Mexico City, about 10 km upstream from the mouth of the Panuco River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico, in a marshland with a developed lagoon. The town developed around a monastery built by Franciscan monks on the site of an Aztec settlement around 1532. It was destroyed by pirates in 1683 and finally rebuilt in 1823. In 1829, Spanish troops landed and occupied the city, but were repelled by General Santa Anna. Until the end of the 19th century, it was just a small shipping port in a fertile but undeveloped hinterland, but after the discovery of oil fields in the surrounding area, it grew rapidly from the beginning of the 20th century with the development of the fields, and at one time became the largest oil shipping port in the world. Pipelines have been built from oil fields such as Ebano, Panuco, Huasteca, and Tuxpan, as well as to Ciudad Victoria and Monterrey, and oil tanks and refineries line the south bank of the Panuco River. The port is equipped with modern port facilities, warehouses, and facilities for loading oil onto tankers, and is currently thriving as Mexico's most modern port. In addition to the oil industry, the city is also home to industries such as machine repair, shipbuilding, sewing, canning, and lumber manufacturing. It is also known as a seaside resort. Transport is extremely convenient, with the city connected to other parts of Mexico by rail, road, and air. Population: 271,636 (1990 estimate).
