But the Catholic Caesar Baronius (1538-1607) refuted this view by publishing a 12-volume ecclesiastical annals up to 1198, based on a comprehensive study of even more historical sources. The academic creation of church annals was continued by other historians, and aroused new interest in church history, leading to the creation of extensive annals by the Jesuits' Bollandian and Benedictine Maurinian schools in the 17th and 18th centuries, and producing a large number of church historians. …
