A large peninsula jutting out to the southwest of the mainland of Kagoshima Prefecture. It faces the Osumi Peninsula, which occupies the eastern half of the mainland. Between the two lies Kagoshima Bay (Kinko Bay), with Sakurajima located near the inner part of the bay. The peninsula is made up of the cities of Kagoshima, Ibusuki, Minamikyushu, Makurazaki, Minamisatsuma, and Hioki. The area that has peninsular characteristics is south of National Route 3, which connects Kagoshima City and Higashiichiki-cho, Hioki City. The mountain range that runs across the peninsula from the center of Kagoshima City is up to about 600 meters high, but the watershed is noticeably biased to the east, and the alluvial lowlands are very narrow except for parts of Kagoshima City and Ibusuki City. In contrast, it is distributed relatively widely on the western side of the peninsula. Behind the west side of Kagoshima City, the so-called Shirasu Plateau crosses the peninsula at an elevation of about 200 meters, continuing to the lowlands of Fukiagehama, which faces the East China Sea. There is also a broad plateau at the southern end of the peninsula that slopes gently southward. Field crops are cultivated on these broad plateaus, with tea and sweet potatoes being the major crops. Ibusuki Onsen, Lake Ikeda, and Mount Kaimon are located near the southeastern end of the peninsula, and are part of the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. From here, travel about 20 kilometers west along the edge of the plateau to the fishing town of Makurazaki. A small peninsula jutting out further northwest is called the Noma Peninsula, and this is the northernmost area where ferns grow naturally and where cycads grow naturally, and has been designated as part of the Bounoma Prefectural Natural Park. Bonotsu in Minamisatsuma City is said to be the place where Ganjin landed and is a town with a long history. The sand dunes of Fukiagehama stretch northward from the base of this small peninsula, forming an arc of about 30 kilometers. The Satsuma Peninsula is also known for the Kiire Oil Storage Base, the world's largest oil storage facility, which was built within the bay.
